The Trump National Security Crisis

Please join the Center for American Progress Action Fund for remarks from and a conversation with Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT), a member of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Sen. Murphy will step back from the headline-grabbing crises in Syria and Ukraine and make the case that there is no corner of the globe that has been made safer after nearly three years of the Trump administration’s foreign policy. He will survey the full global scope of the damage caused and argue that Republicans are poised to lose any national security advantage they enjoy over Democrats if they continue to support President Donald Trump’s disastrous foreign policy.

For years, Sen. Murphy has focused on how progressives can close the perceived national security gap with Republicans and strengthen America’s role in the world. This month, Sen. Murphy penned a piece for The Atlantic in which he makes the case that a Democratic administration will need a new foreign policy toolkit to advance U.S. values and interests abroad. In 2015, Sen. Murphy authored a report titled “Rethinking the Battlefield,” which laid out a comprehensive road map for rebuilding U.S. foreign policy in order to keep pace with global challenges.
