Summary
The Senior Vice President for National Security and International Policy will lead American Progress’ internationally focused research and programs and develop a new and coherent vision for foreign policy and national security. This leader should be an experienced professional who, along with their team leads, will lay the foundation for how to maintain America’s strength and competitiveness internationally at this hinge point in global history.
The Senior Vice President will be expected to coordinate policy analysis and substantial research and writing for the department while also working on relevant ideas and issues. The position will also manage the department’s budget and relationships with outside stakeholders, including allied organizations, policymakers, and the media.
This leader will have the opportunity to further build and manage a dynamic, high-performing department. They will also collaborate across American Progress and work with the President and CEO. This leader will develop a long-term strategic plan for the department, lead the generation of novel policy ideas, and put forward a new policy agenda that responds to this historic moment in America’s relationship with the world. The leader will also be expected to help garner financial resources for the department. The ideal candidate will have a strong command and understanding of U.S. national security and international policy, facility with government institutions at the federal level, senior executive or legislative branch experience, and relationships with key players in the field.
Responsibilities:
- Provide day-to-day management for policy team leads.
- Develop American Progress’ foreign policy agenda.
- Work with the President and CEO and the Executive Vice President for Policy to set the strategic direction for the department.
- Collaborate with the Communications Department, Advocacy and Outreach Department, and other teams across American Progress to drive a new vision for American foreign policy.
- Manage the department budget and, in coordination with the Executive Vice President for Policy and the Development Department, fundraise to meet the department’s work plan and to support American Progress’ crosscutting work.
- Manage cross-border collaborations, partnerships, and international projects.
- Represent the department to the public, media, and other outside groups and individuals.
- Oversee drafting, review, and publication of the department’s work products.
- Keep American Progress staff updated on news and events related to relevant policy debates in Congress and/or the administration.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements and qualifications:
- Commitment to American Progress’ mission and goals.
- Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred.
- Management skills and a track record of working effectively inside large organizations.
- White House, State Department, Defense Department, or equivalent experience with federal foreign policymaking is highly preferred.
- Experience working with Congress and federal agencies as well as established relationships with policymakers, advocates, and community leaders inside Washington, D.C., and in the states.
- Experience working with external stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and execute fundraising strategies that support American Progress’ mission and financial goals.
- Excellent presentation and written and oral communication skills.
- Strong analytical skills; quantitative skills are a plus.
- Demonstrated ability to develop strategic, long-term plans and implement them successfully.
- Strong political instincts and experience working with coalitions.
- Experience managing departmental budgets.
- Ability to prioritize, multitask, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
