Washington, D.C. — The Center for American Progress Action Fund will host U.S. Sen. Richard Durbin (D-IL) on Tuesday, January 24, at 2:30 p.m. for a speech on the importance of a comprehensive investigation into the allegations of Russia’s influence on the 2016 presidential election and the Russian government’s possible ability to compromise the president.
As the United States prepares for the new administration of President-elect Donald Trump, there are continuing reports of allegations stating that attempts were made by the Russian government, under direct order of President Vladimir Putin, to compromise the president-elect. The American people deserve to know the credibility of these allegations, and they warrant serious investigation by a select committee in Congress or a commission of public officials and private citizens with subpoena power to investigate them. The allegation that an American president could be susceptible to blackmail by a hostile foreign government is historic and deeply troubling. Furthermore, the resistance of Republican leaders in the Senate and House of Representatives to an investigation surrounding Russia’s actions toward President-elect Trump is all the more inexplicable.
