RELEASE: CAP Action Releases 25 Profiles in Corruption for Vulnerable House Republicans

Washington, D.C. — With Republicans in Congress increasingly imperiled by their own culture of corruption, today the Center for American Progress Action Fund released Profiles in Corruption, a new website that exposes the part that 25 vulnerable House Republicans have played in spreading that culture. The website will be the home base for a sustained campaign to engage grassroots partners online and through social media during the midterm elections.

As CAP Action polling recently found, corruption has already taken a heavy toll on the Republican Party with the public, ranging from President Trump’s Cabinet members’ indulgences to the Republican tax bill’s benefits for big donors. Now, as individual Republican House members including Reps. Chris Collins (NY-27), Vern Buchanan (FL-16), and Devin Nunes (CA-22) put a face on that corruption, the critique will become even more real for American voters looking toward November.

CAP Action’s Profiles in Corruption aims to bring more corrupt Republican representatives out of the shadows and show how their signature tax bill marked a historic milestone in government corruption. The website connects the astounding amounts of special interest contributions these representatives have taken with the even more astounding tax breaks given to those industries in the Republican tax bill—then shows how middle-class and working Americans are hit with higher costs that leave them falling further behind.

“The Republican culture of corruption in Washington has enriched Republican members of Congress and their wealthy donors, while sticking the middle class with the bill,” said CAP Action Executive Director Navin Nayak. “Heading into November, we plan to tell a clear story about how Republicans are working for the wealthy and the well-connected and why it’s past time we clean up the corruption in Washington.”
