Washington, D.C. — Today the Center for American Progress Action Fund released the following statement from Angela M. Kelley, Vice President for Immigration Policy and Advocacy, on the re-election of President Barack Obama:
One indisputable lesson from November 6 is that the road to the White House ran through the “barrio.” Latino voters punched above their weight, paved the way for President Obama’s second term, and played a key role in races like the Virginia Senate contest. Last night a record breaking number of Latinos turned out to vote and a stunning 75 percent supported President Obama.
Long gone are the days when George W. Bush won 40-plus percent support of the Latino vote. The Republican Party’s hard right turn on immigration alienated Latino voters putting them in a full-fledged free-fall with the community.
Latino voters’ Election Day message needs no translation: Reforma por favor.
