STATEMENT: Patrick Gaspard on the Trump Campaign’s Lies About CAP and Project 2025 Deflection

Washington, D.C. — Yesterday, Trump campaign senior adviser Corey Lewandowski attacked the Center for American Progress when pressed on the former president’s association with Project 2025. In response, Patrick Gaspard, CEO of the Center for American Progress Action Fund, released the following statement:

How can you tell when a MAGA Republican is lying? Check to see if they’re moving their lips. Corey Lewandowski is Exhibit A of this phenomenon.

In a laughable attempt to deflect the heat that Donald Trump and JD Vance are feeling over Project 2025, Lewandowski tried to run away from Ari Melber’s questions and instead attack the work of CAP. This spin was unsurprisingly filled with lies that have become commonplace for these fear merchants. Trump and Lewandowski can have their authoritarian fantasies, but we’re calling bull on their alternative facts.

It’s routine for administrations of both parties to bring on experts from across the think tanks. It’s not routine to have an authoritarian playbook crafted by at least 140 people who served directly for the former president. CAP is also not the think tank threatening to launch a potentially violent “second American Revolution” if it doesn’t get its way. Project 2025 is ultimately about dismantling our checks and balances—from weaponizing the Department of Justice to empowering bureaucrats to monitor women’s pregnancies.

CAP is focused on strengthening our democracy by growing the middle class, and CAP Action doesn’t exploit the most vulnerable in order to score cheap political points. CAP is proud of its transparency on policymaking. Details on CAP’s actual positions on closing the racial wealth gap and protections for LGBTQ minors can be found here.
